If you’re up-to-date with skin innovations, chances are you’ve heard whispers about Rejuran – the Korean treatment administered in a clinical setting making a quiet yet powerful entrance into Australia’s aesthetic scene. Already a firm favourite across Asia (especially South Korea), this treatment goes beyond hydration or surface plumping. Instead, it works at a cellular level to support natural renewal and skin quality.
I recently tried this treatment and I would describe the procedure as mildly uncomfortable but worthwhile in the long term. Thankfully, numbing cream was applied beforehand, which helped dull the sting. But you’ll still feel it, particularly around sensitive areas like the under eyes and cheeks. Let’s just say – it’s not one to book in before brunch!
So, What Is Rejuran?
Often referred to by its nickname ‘salmon sperm facial’, Rejuran is a bio-regenerative treatment made from polynucleotides (PNs)- long-chain DNA molecules extracted from wild salmon. These fragments are highly purified and delivered into the skin via a fine needle. Once injected, they may support the skin’s natural renewal process and appearance of hydration and texture.
The science may sound intimidating, but the concept is simple: rather than filling or freezing the skin, Rejuran helps it heal and regenerate from within. As Dr Min-Qing Lee, Cosmetic Doctor at Hair and Skin Science explains: “Rejuran is used in clinical settings to support the appearance of improved skin texture and elasticity. It has also been observed to assist in the visible management of fine lines, dryness, and pigmentation.
The Benefits
Rejuran is being praised for its wide-ranging benefits, which include:
- Improved skin texture and elasticity
- Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Enhanced hydration and skin luminosity
- Refined pores and smoother tone
- Improved barrier function for sensitive or thin skin
Dr Lee notes that some of the best results are seen around the eyes, where skin is naturally thin and prone to early signs of ageing. “It supports skin hydration and firmness without changing the shape of the face,” he explains.
Who Is It For?
Rejuran is suitable for men and women of all ages, but especially those experiencing:
- Fine lines and dullness
- Acne scarring or texture concerns
- Dark under-eye circles
- Skin sensitivity or poor barrier function
- An interest in rejuvenation without volumising treatments
The Treatment Experience
Unlike a facial, this is a clinical treatment involving microinjections. Rejuran involves a series of tiny injections into the dermis, and depending on your skin condition and sensitivity, it can feel a little like sharp bee stings. Most clinics will apply a topical anaesthetic to numb the area, but you’ll still feel the pressure and pinch of each injection.
The full procedure takes around 30 to 45 minutes, with most patients experiencing some redness, swelling, or small bumps for 24 to 48 hours afterwards, similar to a dermal filler session. Make-up should be avoided for a day or two, so plan accordingly.
Dr Lee also emphasises the role of practitioner skill in the treatment experience: “Pain management depends on technique. An experienced practitioner will work with precision and speed, which makes all the difference. Some clinics may offer nitrous oxide, but it’s not without risks, so it’s always best to discuss your comfort level in advance.”
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Some individuals report visible improvements in skin glow and hydration over time, optimal results are typically seen after a course of three treatments, spaced around 2–4 weeks apart. From there, maintenance every 6–12 months can help preserve results.

Real-Life Results
Some clinics use Rejuran in conjunction with other clinical techniques to enhance overall skin quality, particularly in cases where patients have not seen desired improvements from other cosmetic procedures.
“We’ve observed visible improvements when combining Rejuran with customised skin treatments. It can be a valuable adjunct in clinical strategies aimed at supporting skin texture and appearance” explains Dr Lee.
Note: Individual experiences and outcomes may vary depending on skin type and overall clinical approach.
Is Rejuran Safe?
Yes. Rejuran has been used in clinical practice since its launch in Korea in 2014. And despite its salmon DNA origins, it’s considered suitable even for those with fish allergies because the DNA is highly purified and refined.
Still, Dr Lee notes a few precautions:
- Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Avoid if you have active skin infections or inflammation
- Consult your doctor if you have a history of severe allergies or hypersensitivity
Rejuran is not your average skin treatment – it’s not designed for a quick fix or superficial plump. Instead, it speaks to a more thoughtful, long-term approach to skin health, focusing on cellular renewal, collagen support, and barrier repair.
Is it comfortable? It may involve mild discomfort, particularly during administration.
Is it worth it? For many patients, the gradual improvements in skin quality may justify the commitment. It’s a treatment that rewards consistency and patience, but reported results include visibly brighter, smoother, and more hydrated skin over time.
