5 Unique Australian Boutique Hotels

5 Unique Australian Boutique Hotels

In a world where travellers crave more than just a place to rest their heads, a new trend is emerging: the transformation of old, forgotten buildings into unique boutique hotels. From historic warehouses to former prison cells and beyond, these repurposed spaces offer a refreshing departure from the cookie-cutter hotel experience, inviting guests to step into a world of charm, character, and one-of-a-kind ambiance. Here’s five of my fave unique boutique hotels.

THE OLD CLARE HOTEL

(Sydney, New South Wales)

Once a heritage-listed brewery and former pub, The Old Clare Hotel now offers boutique accommodations in the heart of Sydney’s vibrant Chippendale neighborhood, blending historic charm with contemporary design.

MOSS MANOR

(Moss Vale, NSW)

A two-storey Georgian-style building, built in the 1890s originally as the mayor’s residence. Most recently it was the local council chambers, and today it is graciously restored to be an sophisticated 8 suite boutique hotel. All the charm and character has been restored with modern artistic touches contrasting old and new.

THE INTERLUDE

(Melbourne, Victoria)

The Interlude is the world’s first urban wellness retreat set in a converted prison. Many might know this hotel from its former life as B Division at the HM Prison Pentridge, once home to some of Australia’s most infamous criminals. Today it is a luxury hotel with every suite designed with high vaulted ceilings, stone walls and contemporary finishes and fittings.

Lon is a farm and former family home transformed into luxurious coastal escape. Perched on 250 acres of rural and conservation land in Point Lonsdale on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, founders Claire & Rob Gemes renovated the sandstone farmhouse over eighteen months, opening Lon Retreat in 2018. Claire’s family have lived and worked this land over seven generations.
