Sustainability Meets Style: The Elegance of 28 Degrees, Byron Bay

28degrees 62lo

In the heart of Byron Bay, where the ocean breeze mingles with the vibrant energy of the town, lies 28 Degrees. A boutique guesthouse that redefines luxury.

Once a cherished family home, this property has been transformed into a private, adults only retreat. It still has the love and soul that feels like a home, yet all the touches of a high-end boutique hotel. My perfect storm!

While being given the tour of the property (which is stunning) by the owner, Deb Garske, I asked her about the name 28 Degrees. Its name reflects not only the latitude of Byron Bay but also a nostalgic nod to the owner’s childhood on Norfolk Island, weaving together two iconic coastal legacies into one exquisite destination.

Location, Location, Location

Situated just one block from Byron’s famous beaches and steps from its celebrated dining and shopping precincts, 28 Degrees is the perfect location. Everything is at your front gate, but once inside, you could be miles from anywhere. Peacefully perfect!

The beach is an easy stroll to catch the sunrise or take it a step (or a few) more and do the Cape Byron Walk. All the best cafes High Life, Combi and Bayleaf Cafe, are all a two minute walk away. And for dinner… No Bones, Bang Bang or Light Years are equally close. Explore Byron’s boutique shops and vibrant markets without the need to find a park, then wander back to 28 Degrees for a dip in your private pool, or relax with the ocean breeze and a good book on the deck.

In a conscious decision not to have TV’s in the rooms, it is an easy way to switch off from the world and make the most of the stunning property and surrounds.

And if you’re looking to explore further afield, complimentary bikes are on hand, making it easy to cruise through Byron’s laid-back streets out to Suffolk Park or Belongil Beach.

A Home That Welcomes You

From the moment you arrive, 28 Degrees a sense of calm greets youu. Designed by interior designer and owner, the delightful Deb, the property combines Byron Bay’s coastal sophistication with the timeless charm of an island retreat. The interiors are meticulously curated with special touches: plush armchairs by Maker & Son, handcrafted ceramic cups by local artist Madhavi Muncie, Hale Mercantile linen, and bespoke rose marble cabinetry crafted by local artisans.

Every detail in every room at 28 Degrees is designed to evoke a sense of easy indulgence, or that often-used term that comes with describing Byron Bay, barefoot luxury.

There’s a thoughtfully stocked minibar filled with locally sourced produce. A selection of granola, seasonal fruits, and homemade compote ensures the perfect start to the morning. Guests can savour slow-drip coffee or enjoy a sundowner on the viewing deck, which offers spectacular views of the lighthouse—a quintessential Byron Bay landmark.

I stayed in one of the Lighthouse View rooms, so I could take in the view while soaking in my outdoor, antique bath. As someone who love Byron Bay and deep baths, this is as close to heaven as it gets.

Something for Everyone

Originally opened in 2015 with seven rooms, 28 Degrees has recently unveiled an impressive new wing, elevating the property to accommodate up to 24 guests. The expansion includes:

Plunge Pool Rooms: Featuring tropical gardens and private pools, these rooms are ideal for secluded relaxation.

Lighthouse Rooms: Offering stunning views of Byron Bay’s iconic lighthouse, these rooms feature antique clawfoot bathtubs—perfect for indulgent soaking sessions, which I can put my hand on my heart and confirm!

The Two-Story Villa: A masterpiece of design and luxury, this villa provides an elevated retreat for special occasions or private getaways. It comes with a complete designer kitchen, perfect for longer stays.

Each addition retains the property’s ethos: a sanctuary for relaxation and connection, where every detail is rooted in both sustainability and refined style.

Sustainability Meets Style

At 28 Degrees, luxury and sustainability go hand in hand. From eco-conscious ammenities to organic bed linens, every element has been chosen to minimise impact without compromising quality.

One notable highlight is the use of the Grander water filtration system. From the water you drink, to that used in every tap, shower and the pool, is filtered by one of the best systems in the world.  With water quality having such a big impact on our health (skin and immune system) this is a big benefit, and yet another small detail that takes 28 Degrees up a notch.

The result is a guesthouse that not only respects its stunning natural surroundings, but also gives you the sense that nothing is compromised.
